Richmond Hill crowned Miss Universe Canada 2009

Mariana Valente - Miss Universe Canada 2009
TORONTO: Mariana Valente, a modeling 23 year-old of Richmond Hill, was crowned Miss Universe Canada 2009 during an the annual pageant held on 16th May at The Metro Toronto Convention Centre's John Bassett Theatre in Toronto.

The new beauty queen, who 1.75 m tall and student of languages, will represent Canada at the Miss Universe pageant.

Miss Universe 2009, the 58th Miss Universe beauty pageant, will be held at the Atlantis Paradise Island, in Nassau, Bahamas on August 23, 2009. Dayana Mendoza, from Venezuela, winner of Miss Universe 2008, will crown her successor in the event.


Mariana has also experience with pageants and modeling as she competed for the title of Miss Brazil Canada in 2005, she won the title of Miss Latina Canada 2007.

Ylenia Aurucci

AGE: 26 | HEIGHT: 5'10" | HOMETOWN: VICTORIA, BC

Ylenia comes from an Italian background and was born in Medellin, Colombia. Her father's work provided her the unique opportunity of being raised in many places around the world. Ylenia is very proud to call Canada home; a place where different cultures, religions and backgrounds are embraced and people are valued for who they are.

Ylenia is fluent in Italian, English and Spanish and in her spare time she enjoys cooking Italian dishes for her family and friends, travelling to adventurous places and being outdoors.

Ylenia has gained memorable experiences while growing up amongst and travelling to diverse cultures in her childhood as well as the more recent experience of living in the multicultural country of Canada. Her unique upbringing has allowed her to appreciate the diverse cultures and traditions that the world has to offer which has taught her to adapt to any circumstance no matter what challenges may come her way.

Ylenia truly believes that things happen for a reason and she always approaches life with an open heart, ready to discover whatever it will reveal to her.

Xiao Sun

AGE: 22 | HEIGHT: 5'8" | HOMETOWN: MONTREAL, QC

Xiao lives in a fusion of Eastern and Western Cultures. She is very grateful for the loving and multicultural Country of Canada which she is proud to call home. She is currently studying Dietetics and Human Nutrition at McGill University.

Xiao is gifted with the talent to dance. She participated in ballet, contemporary, and traditional Chinese dancing since the young age of five. When on stage, she expresses her feelings through the most beautiful body language-dancing.

She also enjoys doing charity work and wants to encourage more people to embrace the ones who need help.

Yasmin Moavenian

AGE: 24 | HEIGHT: 5'7" | HOMETOWN: TORONTO, ON

Yasmin Moavenian was born and raised in North York, Ontario. She attended the prestigious Toronto French School from the age of 3, and remained there until she graduated from high school. It was there that she received her Brevet Diploma, and completed the International Baccalaureate program.

She picked up a native level of French, perfected her English, and even some Spanish along the way. She went on to complete an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Religion from the University of Toronto. While attending University, she had the pleasure of being part of one of North America’s largest sororities, Kappa Kappa Gamma. Yasmin is in law school and plans on graduating and writing the bar in 2011.

When she’s not buried underneath a pile of books, she divides her time between her family and friends. You’ll usually find her at home and in the kitchen, attempting to bake or simply entertaining. This past year, she discovered a strong passion for snowboarding. Philanthropy and a love for the arts are two other topics dear to Yasmin’s heart.

Vincenza Jinny Conte

AGE: 25 | HEIGHT: 5'6" | HOMETOWN: LASALLE, QC

Vincenza was born and raised in Montreal, Quebec. She loves to travel and learn new languages. She speaks English, French and Italian fluently and is currently learning how to speak Spanish. She has travelled to Italy, Switzerland, Germany, France, England, Mexico, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Antigua, St. Lucia, Barbados, Puerto Rico, Spain and many cities in the United States.

She has her Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and is currently working in a research lab at the Montreal Children’s Hospital Research Institute in Ocular Genetics. She is of Italian decent and feels very lucky to have an extremely close family.

Vincenza has training in hip hop dancing, she models and has been in music videos. She loves sports, all sports, and has been playing hockey since she was 8 years old as a goalie. She is the biggest Montreal Canadiens fan. GO HABS GO!

Valerie Remillard

AGE: 21 | HEIGHT: 5'8" | HOMETOWN: ST-FELIX-DE-VALOIS, QC

Valerie grew up in a small village and was always surrounded by people who have helped her to achieve her dreams. Having a great artistic sense, Valerie followed 6 years of voice lessons, art classes and dramatic arts. She’s a model who also does volunteer work and help for the causes that she holds dear. She currently works in International Hotel Management.

Valerie feels that contact with people is primordial. Valerie is a volunteer in a center for seniors where she visits each week for Zoo Therapy with her pet dog. She is a person who likes to keep informed about what's happening in the world, being very personable she would like to travel and have the opportunity to participate in multiple humanitarian events.

TingJia Lorigiano

AGE:18 | HEIGHT: 5'8" | HOMETOWN: MONTREAL, QC

TingJia was born into the English and French community of Montreal as a Eurasian-Canadian, which has imparted her with a rich sense of customs and traditions. She is currently attending Vanier Cegep and will graduate in May 2009 with top honours from the Honours Health Science Program.

TingJia’s strong work ethic, persistence and devotion to her endeavours are evident in both her stellar academic career and dedicated volunteer work at retirement homes and elementary schools within her community. She has succeeded in planning and launching charity events and awareness campaigns, by bringing together different groups in the Montreal community.
In her spare time, TingJia loves to curl up with a good book, write stories and explore. She also enjoys playing the saxophone, learning about science, doing yoga and swimming.

Tea-Nercita Savic

AGE: 21 | HEIGHT: 5'11" | HOMETOWN: BELLEVILLE, ON

Tea-Nercita Savic is a charismatic individual who possesses a genuine passion for life. At the age of 10, Tea and her family left her native home in Tuzla, Bosnia, to start a new life in what she now calls “the greatest country in the world” – Canada. Growing up in Ontario, Tea found her passion in the humanities and the arts. Tea is presently an Honors student in the field of Humanities, and is a devout student of both the piano and the harp.

When she is not immersed in books or music, Tea finds time to explore her other passions which include dancing and fitness, along with family and worthy volunteer endeavours. In all of these areas, Tea has always stood out as a leader – whether it is in setting an example to those close to her to keep fit and have fun doing it, or whether it is in demonstrating values of caring and compassion to her younger siblings and the members of her community.

Tea is truly a philanthropist who believes that we can all positively impact the world and those around us when we “lead by doing”.

Tara Mobayen

AGE: 21 | HEIGHT: 5'7" | HOMETOWN: TORONTO, ON

Tara was born in Shiraz, Iran and moved to Canada as a teenager to settle in Toronto, Ontario where doors of opportunities opened. She began her modeling career at the age of 17 and is currently studying at the University of Toronto, where she is double majoring in Human Biology and Astrophysics.

Tara is the youngest of 3 siblings, is fluent in English and Farsi and holds a certificate in Cosmetology. After losing her father to colon cancer two years ago, she endeavours to seize every positive opportunity and appreciates the simpler things in life.

Tara is an avid swimmer. She obtained a gold medal in 2000 at the Provincial Breast Stroke Swimming Competition. In addition, she achieved first place in the Provincial Math Olympiad of 2002. Tara has inherited her love for painting and drawing from her mom. She has participated in several painting competitions and earned third place in an oil on canvas regional painting competition in 2001.

Tara also enjoys poetry, rollerblading, baking cakes, and dancing. She is extremely family oriented, and loves traveling and meeting new people.

Tannaz Alesatar

AGE: 24 | HEIGHT: 5'10" | HOMETOWN: VANCOUVER, BC

Tannaz was born in Iran and moved to Canada as a teenager; and is grateful for the opportunity to live in this wonderful Country. She is bilingual in Farsi and English and is currently in her last semester in Simon Fraser University completing a B.A of Communication and Mass Media.

In the future she’s eager to further her education in a Masters Program of Communication and hopes to work in the media and entertainment industry.

Tannaz enjoys many kinds of sports such as soccer and basketball. In high school, she was a member of the basketball team and poetry group. In her spare time, she enjoys writing poems, cooking, working out, dancing and is a trained belly dancer.

Stephanie Bulgaretti

AGE: 20 | HEIGHT: 5'7" | HOMETOWN: WOODBRIDGE, ON

Stephanie is currently working in retail and has graduated from Humber College with a Fashion Arts diploma. In the future, she hopes to go back to school for design and open her own business for both styling and design. She is in the process of designing and making her own collection of dresses. She hopes to have her designs on the red carpet and to be worn by many famous and influential women.

There is one charity in particular that is close to her heart; the Lupus foundation of Ontario. Her mother in currently suffering with lupus and Stephanie would like to make as many people aware of this disease as possible.

Some of her favourite past times would be to visit Downtown Toronto’s Eaton Center, working out at the gym and spending time with friends and family.

Sonya Durante

AGE: 26 | HEIGHT: 5'11" | HOMETOWN: VANCOUVER, BC

Sonya was born in Vancouver to Australian and English parents and began gaining stage experience working as a fashion model at the age of 15. She’s appeared in magazines, advertising, music videos, TV shows and walked the catwalk locally and internationally for close to 10 years.

She graduated from Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, with a bachelor of Business Degree, specializing in finance, marketing and communications. While completing her degree, she spent a year abroad studying art and history outside of London, England. She currently works for L’Oreal Canada, and hopes to further her professional experience with them.

As a child, Sonya was active in tap, Hawaiian dance, gymnastics, swimming, skiing and piano. But her love for experiencing different cultures through traveling has led her around the globe.

Sandra Kirilovic

AGE: 21 | HEIGHT: 5'9" | HOMETOWN: NIAGARA FALLS, ON

Sandra Kirilovic was born in Etobicoke, Ontario and spent her childhood in three different communities: Oakville, Kincardine and Niagara Falls. Activities that Sandra developed a passion for include: art, design, drama, and athletics. In high school, Sandra placed second in the Senior Women’s Double at the Canadian Secondary School Rowing Championships.

After graduating from high school, Sandra moved to London, Ontario, where in June 2008, she graduated from the University of Western Ontario with an Honours Specialization in Psychology. Sandra currently resides in London where she is working and making arrangements for her future. Sandra hopes to become an environmental lawyer so she can work with companies and the government to promote environmental sustainability. She is currently looking to complete a postgraduate program in the environmental & marketing field and then enter law school.
Sandra is a proud member of the Serbian community. Some of her hobbies include: rowing, swimming, art, yoga, and taking her golden retriever puppy, “Cheese,” to the dog park.

Sameet Gill - Miss Universe Canada 2009 Contestant

Sameet Gill

AGE: 21 | HEIGHT: 5'8" | HOMETOWN: EDMONTON, AB

Sameet Gill was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. She is a passionate and ambitious young woman of East Indian descent aspiring to become a doctor.

Sameet is the vice president of a non-profit organization called Circle K International. This year she has helped coordinate numerous fundraisers including the Bissell Centre Gift wrap, which raised $6500 for the homeless shelter and a carwash for the Cross Cancer Institute that raised $1300.

She is in her fourth year at the University of Alberta where she is majoring in chemistry. She is enlisted on the dean’s honour roll at the University of Alberta.
Her hobbies include volunteering, hanging out with her mom and running. Sameet hopes to one day become an international ambassador for Canada and work to create solutions to global problems like hunger, disease and poverty.

Rudia Jang

AGE: 23 | HEIGHT: 5'7" | HOMETOWN: SURREY, BC

Rudia Jang was born in South Korea and immigrated to Canada with her family where she learned to cherish and love the diverse cultures that make Canada truly unique. Rudia is an ambitious, compassionate, and beautiful 23 year-old who is passionate about the issues of world poverty and hunger that strike developing countries.
In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends. Her hobbies include: volunteering, reading, learning languages, horseback riding, grooming her pet dog Jolie, and watching romantic comedies. Since her philosophy in life is to enjoy and cherish every moment that is given to her, she hopes that Miss Universe Canada will be a tremendous learning opportunity.

The Final Show and Crowning on Saturday May 16th @ 7:30pm. Miss Universe Canada 2008, Samantha Tajik , will crown her successor at the end of beauty contest. The Beauty Queen Miss Universe Canada 2009 will represent her country in the Miss Universe competition pageant.

Miss Universe 2009, the 58th Miss Universe beauty pageant, will be held at the Atlantis Paradise Island, in Nassau, Bahamas on August 23, 2009. Dayana Mendoza, from Venezuela, winner of Miss Universe 2008, will crown her successor in the event.

Rosalba Vagge

AGE: 26 | HEIGHT: 5'7" | HOMETOWN: VANCOUVER, BC

Some may see Rosalba’s story as a tragedy, but she wants them to see her as an individual who beat the odds. Rosalba was living on the streets of Mexico City as an orphan until she was 3, but was then adopted and brought to Canada for a new chance at life. She has endured sexual and physical abuse and had a terrible accident that could’ve scared her physically. Through all this she has chosen to stay and learn from it, she feels she is still very lucky because she has met many wonderful people, opportunities and continues to see them to grow.

Working as a model in Vancouver, Mexico, Dominican Republic, China and Peru for print modeling has helped her gain confidence in herself as a woman.

This past year Rosalba ventured off to Fitness Universe Miami, where she learned so much about a healthy body and disciplines; then Miss Latina Canada 2009, where she placed 2nd Runner Up and won Miss Photogenic. There she learned a great deal of stage presentation and strengthened her communication skills. She also accredits many of her leadership skills to working with companies such as Mega Silver Inc., Providence Health Care Financial Department and many more, and also the people that have been her mentors and advisors.

Ravi Bansal

AGE: 24 | HEIGHT: 5'8" | HOMETOWN: BURNABY, BC

Ravi Bansal was born and raised in beautiful British Columbia. Ravi grew up in the city of Burnaby with her Parent’s, grandmother, two younger sisters and brother. Her Parents were born and raised in India and moved to Canada intrigued by the multicultural society; which has allowed Ravi to appreciate and practice both Indian and Canadian values simultaneously.

Ravi has received her degree in Arts & Social Sciences from Simon Fraser University, graduating as the Valedictorian of her class.

Ravi believes her social responsibility is to end the sex trade industry in India & China. She has begun to move towards her goal by creating a foundation called Gayannh with her dance team SFU Girls Giddha. The foundation aims to provide women and children with unfortunate circumstances greater opportunities including education, health-care, sustainable housing and microcredits.

Rachelle Comeau

AGE: 20| HEIGHT: 5'8" | HOMETOWN: KITCHENER, ON

Born in Montreal, Quebec, Rachelle relocated to Kitchener, Ontario with her family at the age of seven. Her interests include reading, traveling, dancing, working out, and practicing yoga.

Rachelle adores traveling and learning about new people, places, and cultures. She also enjoys her alone time by captivating her creative skills; with a love for fashion, Rachelle enjoys designing and sewing her own creations. She believes the key to success is the ability to balance working independently and as part of a team. Rachelle also believes staying true to oneself and being fearless in sharing this with the world is the key to happiness, as her favourite poem reflects, “Sometimes taking the road less traveled by, makes all the difference.”

She is currently studying in her second year at Wilfrid Laurier University. With courses such as psychology and philosophy Rachelle is fascinated by the human condition. Her goal is to pursue a career in journalism. Rachelle is also interested in the art of acting as it allows her to creatively explore the experiences and emotions of different characters, embracing her passion of learning about people.

Perla Marcano Urena

AGE: 19 | HEIGHT: 5'6" | HOMETOWN: BLAINVILLE, QC

Perla Marcano Urena is 19 years old; her parents are from the Dominican Republic and she was born and raised in Montreal Quebec until the age of 10. She then moved to Vancouver B.C. until the age of 18, then destiny brought her back to her hometown, Montreal where she currently resides. Perla proudly speaks three languages fluently, Spanish, French and English.

Perla believes as an individual it is hard to change the world but as long as she touches one person’s heart it is a great achievement. She takes pride in the fact that her family and friends describe her as an optimistic idealist, and that she has usually provided positive energy in their company.

Paula Bailey - Miss Universe Canada 2009 Contestant

Paula Bailey

AGE: 25 | HEIGHT: 6'2" | HOMETOWN: EDMONTON, AB

Paula was born and raised in Fort McMurray, Alberta, but currently lives in Edmonton. She is of Eastern Canadian and Aboriginal decent. Paula completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree at the age of 22. Since then she has worked with First Nations communities as a Public Health Nurse, and additionally with elderly patients at a Rehabilitation hospital.

Paula values the importance of living a healthy lifestyle that encompasses physical, mental, emotional and spiritual balance. She enjoys promoting confidence and positive choices in Aboriginal youth, particularly young women.

Some of Paula’s interests include reading, travel, exercise, music and modeling. She has participated in many fashion shows in support of local charities, and has volunteered at community events and gatherings. Paula is happy spending time with friends and family, but also appreciates the quietness of a hot bath, or baking in the kitchen.
