A handful of local young ladies will grace the stage alongside contestants from across the country at next month's Miss World Canada and Miss Teen Global pageant.

Surrey's Nicole Raj, Poonam Punni and Ritika Bhachu will compete for the Miss World Canada title, while Avien Kalur and Preet Gill are vying for the Miss Teen crown. In all, there are 33 Miss World Canada contestants from across the country, and 14 for the Miss Teen Global.

This is the first time Surrey will host the Miss World Canada portion, which has been held in Toronto in previous years. Miss Teen Global was held in Surrey in 2005.

Apart from the signature glitz and glamour of such events, the pageant will continue to follow Miss World president Julia Morley's motto "Beauty With A Purpose."

Contestants will be asked to display both their inner and outer beauty as 10 per cent of their final score will be based on their fundraising efforts for Variety - The Children's Charity.

The winner of Miss World Canada 2010 will travel abroad and represent Canada in the Miss World pageant in Vietnam in November, becoming a celebrity spokesperson, raising money for children's charities and receiving preparation in wardrobe, media and interview training to compete at the world's.

The Miss Teen Global winner will win a trip to Hollywood to take part in the Variety International conference.

Last year's Miss World Canada winner, Lena Ma, will be passing on her crown at this year's pageant, taking place on May 7, 7 p.m. at Chandos Pattison Auditorium, 10238 168 St. Tickets can be purchased at www.missworldcanada.org. In addition to raising funds through ticket sales, the public can also participate in a silent auction starting at 6 p.m with the proceeds going to Variety. The Miss World Canada pageant will televised on CHEK TV on May 30.
